William G. Beckwith invented this small sewing machine, which he patented on April 18, 1871.​ It was produced by The Beckwith Sewing Machine Company of New York. The stitchaplate was marked "Beckwith S.M. Co. N.Y. Pt. Apr. 18.71 by Wm. G. Beckwith Foreign Patents Secured" and "G.W. Bacon & Co. London, Eng." Later examples of this sewing machine were finished with a black enamel (japanned) with gold pinstripes.
